Roblox, the popular online gaming and game-creation platform, faced a major service disruption on Friday, leaving thousands of users unable to access the website or play games smoothly.

Data from outage tracking platform Downdetector showed a sharp spike in complaints, pointing to a widespread technical issue affecting users across multiple regions.

Downdetector data indicated that more than 29,000 users in the United States reported problems late Thursday evening local time in the US. The timing suggests the outage began late in the US and continued into Friday.

Users reported difficulties logging in, loading the website, and joining game servers.

Roblox acknowledged the disruption on its official status page, saying it was investigating an issue preventing users from accessing the website. The company did not provide details on the cause. It is unclear whether the outage was due to server overload, a technical glitch, or backend maintenance.

Downdetector’s breakdown showed that website access was the biggest problem. About 63 per cent of complaints were related to the Roblox website being down.

Around 27 per cent of users reported server connection issues. Another 10 per cent faced gameplay problems such as lag and sudden crashes.

Major US cities including Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles and New York were among the most affected.

Many users reported seeing error code 9007 while trying to access Roblox. This error usually appears when a website fails to maintain a stable connection with its servers. It can be triggered by network instability, ISP issues, weak WiFi, or VPN usage.

In India, several users reported encountering a 504 Gateway Timeout error. This typically occurs when one server fails to receive a timely response from another, often due to data centre issues or server downtime.

The outage triggered a wave of reactions on social media platforms, especially X. Users shared their frustration over being unable to load the platform, getting disconnected mid-game, or failing to join servers.

Some users also warned others to avoid joining games during the outage to prevent potential data loss. Others speculated about backend system changes possibly contributing to the disruption.

As of the latest update, Roblox had not shared a timeline for full service restoration.
