School Holiday Today: As schools across India wind down for the festive stretch surrounding Diwali, Wednesday 22 October 2025 stands out as a day when many educational institutions remain shut — in part because of Govardhan Puja and related observances.
Post-Diwali festival, the majority of northern and central states have fully declared a vacation, while others—especially the southern states— have extended their vacation because of the pouring rain coupled with flood warnings.
In the National Capital Region, which includes Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram, the schools are closed today to observe Govardhan Puja, after a two-day holiday for Diwali. The festive calendar guides the closure not only for government schools but also for private ones.
In Uttar Pradesh, the state education department has announced that schools will be closed from October 20 to 23, thus covering the holidays for Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj.
Schools that were already closed for Diwali celebrations in Punjab and Haryana have now added another day of vacation for Govardhan Puja observance.
In the east, the states of West Bengal and Odisha have declared four days from 20 to 23 October as public holidays for Kali Puja, Diwali, and Bhai Dooj, thus also keeping schools closed today. Likewise, Bihar is observing school holidays for Govardhan Puja and Chhath preparations.
As we move down south, schools in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are having Govardhan Puja holidays, but the Udupi and Cuddalore districts, which are on the coast, are facing the addition of rain-related closures because the IMD has forecasted heavy rains on the western coast.
In the state of Kerala, some districts such as Idukki and Wayanad are closed for the festival, but also for the flood warnings and the state athletics meet that is going to be held this week.
Schools in Chennai will also stay closed today due to the heavy rain prediction.
However, since school schedules can differ by district and board, it is recommended that parents and students verify with their particular institution or local education department regarding school closures.
