Sensex, Nifty50 extend losses to 3rd straight day amid volatile trade

Published on 23/09/2025 04:09 PM

Domestic equity benchmarks gave up initial gains in a session full of seesaw moves on Tuesday, continuing to fall for a third straight trading day, as selling pressure in FMCG shares outweighed buying in auto and financial stocks. Both main indices declined 0.1 per cent for the day, with the Sensex dropping 57.9 points to end at 82,102.1 and the Nifty50 giving up 32.9 points to 25,169.5. Analysts continued to weigh the impact of GST 2.0 rate cuts, which took effect the previous day, with businesses announcing a slew of rate cuts to pass on the benefits of lower indirect taxes to consumers.

The central government was monitoring industry rate cuts closely and awaiting data on more than 50 product categories, said sources.

The Sensex began the day on a mildly positive note and changed direction at least seven times during the session, gyrating in a range of nearly 600 points around the flatline. The Nifty50 broadly moved within the 25,100-25,250 band in intraday trade.

Top index movers

HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and HUL were the biggest contributors to the losses in Sensex and Nifty50.

The Nifty Bank -- whose 12 constituents include HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank -- rose 0.4 per cent for the day, led by SBI and Axis Bank.

Among broader indices, the Nifty Midcap 100 and the Nifty Smallcap 100 declined about half a per cent each, reflecting selling across the minnows as well.

Overall market breadth was negative, as only four stocks rose against every five rising stocks on BSE at the end of the day.
