Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights: Nifty closes below 20-DMA at the lowest since May 9 as 50% tariffs loom

The Nifty ended close to the lows of the day and will look for support at these lower levels when trading resumes on Thursday on the monthly expiry day.

Tomorrow will be a trading holiday on account of Ganesh Chaturthi.

The Nifty 50 index had a forgettable session on Tuesday, with the index declining over 250 points but closed above the 24,700 mark.

The fall in banking stocks also led to the Nifty Bank declining as much as 700 points on Tuesday. Not only that, the index closed below the 55,000 mark for the first time since May 22.

All sectoral indices, barring the FMCG stocks ended with losses on Tuesday. Losses were led by the Real Estate, PSU Banks, Metal, Pharma and Energy stocks, with these indices closing with losses between 1.5% to 2.5%.

The top five contributors to the Nifty’s fall on Tuesday are contributing nearly 50% to the overall decline.

ICICI Bank (37 points) Reliance Industries (30 points), Bharti Airtel (22 points), M&M (22 points), and L&T (21 points) are together contributing over 130 points to the Nifty’s 270-point fall on Tuesday.

The Nifty made a new intraday low of 24,689 on Tuesday, as losses continued to mount following intense selling pressure on the penultimate day of the August F&O series.

With this, the index has not only given up all the gains for the August series, it has also slipped below its 20-DMA of 24,737.

Shares of Vishal Mega Mart gained as much as 5% on Tuesday as part of the MSCI flows.

The stock is now part of the MSCI Standard Index and was set to receive inflows in excess of $250 million.

At today’s intraday high of ₹157.55, the stock has doubled from its IPO price of ₹78 per share.

After holding firm for a better part of the day, the Nifty has slipped below its 20-Day Moving Average (DMA) of 24,737, to make a new intraday low of 24,711.65.

Trent, Coal India, Eternal, Reliance Industries, have all extended their losses.

French stocks fell on Tuesday as political uncertainty ratcheted up following Prime Minister Francois Bayrou’s plan to call a confidence vote.

The CAC 40 Index tumbled 1.7% at 10:50 a.m. in Paris, while the pan-European Stoxx 600 dropped 0.6%. The UK’s FTSE 100 retreated 0.5% as the market reopened after a holiday, and following data showing food prices rose at their fastest pace since February 2024.

Bayrou’s call for a confidence vote may topple France’s government as soon as next month. The far-right National Rally party, the leftist France Unbowed and the Greens all said they would vote against the September 8 motion, while the Socialists said they wouldn’t back the government.

Nifty Falls close to 800 points

The Banking index continues to fall, declining by over 600 points, dipping to the day’s low.

HDFC Bank has revised the eligibility rules for its Imperia programme, a premium banking service that offers exclusive benefits to select customers. The changes, focused on a new Total Relationship Value (TRV) requirement, will take effect from October 1, 2025, the bank informed customers via official communication.
