Stock market holiday: Reason why NSE and BSE will remain shut on 22 October

Stock Market Holiday on Oct 22, 2025: Indian stock markets will observe a trading holiday on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, as both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain shut for the day.

The closure comes on account of Diwali Balipratipada, also known as Bali Padyami or Bali Pratipada, which is celebrated across several states in India. This day marks the victory of Lord Vishnu over King Bali and is observed as a significant festival, particularly in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat.

Trading in equity, derivatives, and commodity segments will be suspended for the day.

Market participants should note that the holiday applies to both cash and derivatives segments. Investors are advised to plan their trades accordingly, as no settlements or transactions will be processed on October 22.

The exchanges will resume normal trading operations on Thursday, October 23, 2025. BSE and NSE typically announce their annual holiday calendar at the beginning of each year, aligning closures with major national and religious festivals.

As per the NSE circular, October 21, 2025 (Tuesday) will be a trading holiday on account of Diwali Laxmi Pujan. However, Muhurat Trading — the special one-hour trading session held annually on Diwali — will take place on the same day.

The Muhurat trading session for 2025 will be held on Tuesday, October 21. The special one-hour trading window is scheduled from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM, preceded by a 15-minute pre-opening session from 1:30 PM to 1:45 PM.
