Stock Market Today: Indian equity benchmarks opened higher on Monday, tracking firm global cues and continued buying in frontline stocks.

The Sensex rose 380.99 points, or 0.45 per cent, to 85,310.35 as of 9:16 am, compared with its previous close of 84,929.36. The 30-share index opened the session at 85,145.90.

The Nifty 50 also started the day on a positive note. The index gained 106.75 points, or 0.41 per cent, to trade at 26,073.15. It had ended the previous session at 25,966.40 and opened at 26,055.85.

Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Tata Steel, Bharat Electronics, Adani Ports, HCL Technologies, Sun Pharma and Maruti Suzuki were the top gainers in early trade, rising up to 3 per cent. On the other hand, UltraTech Cement, Power Grid and M&M were the only stocks trading in the red.

Sector-wise, the Nifty IT index was the top performer, rising over 1 per cent. This was followed by buying in media and consumer durables stocks, with the Nifty Media and Nifty Consumer Durables indices also trading higher.

Asian markets were mostly higher on Monday after China’s central bank kept its loan prime rates unchanged. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was up 1.86 per cent, South Korea’s KOSPI gained 1.9 per cent, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.83 per cent in early trade.

US markets ended sharply higher on Friday for the second straight session. AI-related stocks led the rally as risk appetite improved after recent volatility. The S&P 500 rose 0.88 per cent, the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.31 per cent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 0.38 per cent.
