STT on futures was hiked to 0.05% from 0.02% earlier.

FM Sitharaman's announcements spooked Dalal Street on Sunday, February 1, resulting in BSE-listed companies wiping out over ₹10 lakh crore in market capitalisation.

Here's how it works:

The Nifty closed at 24,825 on Sunday. Let us assume a closing level of 24,800 for the Nifty.

Currently, one lot of Nifty futures is 65 shares. This takes the total transaction cost for one lot to ₹16.12 lakh.

At 0.02%, the Securities Transaction Tax paid on one lot of Nifty futures would be ₹322.4.

Now, the STT has been hiked by 150% to 0.05%.

At the revised levies, the STT paid on one lot of Nifty futures will increase to as high as ₹806, a difference of ₹481 from the previous levy.
