Yet again Mohanlal has proved that he is the uncrowned king of Malayalam Cinema as his latest Thudarum emerged as a resounding hit. But it’s a jackpot at the box office, rolling ₹13.5 crore in just two days of its release, for the Tharun Moorthy film.

A Flying Start

An early estimate of the fantasy drama by trade analyst company Sacnilk suggests, Thudarum has collected ₹5.25 crore on its first day, which is a solid start. The momentum just continued as collections on Day 2 jumped impressively to ₹8.25 crore. It’s been the Malayalam version of the film that has been leading from the front with the Telugu dubbed version managing only some share over the figures.

Buoyed by positive word of mouth and strong reviews, Thudarum should have a solid weekend and beyond. The reaction only confirms the fact that Mohanlal still commands the numerical audience numbers and term-wise referrals, it is another dying addition to the never-ending cap.

How about a second version that’s a little more upbeat or social media—friendly?

Overwhelmed by the viewers' reaction, Mohanlal shared a heartfelt post on social media. “I am grateful and feel very lucky to get so much love and a response from the heart for Thudarum. Every tweet, every kind word, has had an impact on me greater than I can fully process...this gratitude doesn’t belong to me alone. It’s everybody’s (who came along with me on this journey).” The film that won the special jury award for its make-up, saw Dhanush pen an emotional thank-you note that read, “My sincere thanks to my director Tharun Moorthy, producer M Renjith and co-writer K.R. Sunil and co-actors Shobana ma and Binu Pappu, the DOP, the prosthetic make-up team of Prakash Varma, had a whole team.

Thudarum is the comeback of Mohanlal – Shobana (after more than 20 years) paired with their previous movie Mambazhakalam (2004). The story of a married family man whose life is upended when he becomes embroiled in a car-related legal wrangle. The other notable cast members include Farhaan Faasil, Thomas Mathew, Bharathiraja and Prakash Varma.
