US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has stated that trade negotiations with India are progressing swiftly, calling the country “easier to deal with” compared to others due to its high tariffs.
Speaking at the White House, Bessent told reporters, “We are very close on India. It is much easier to negotiate because they have very high, unfair trade tariffs.”
Bessent added that India is the furthest along in the US's ongoing trade discussions, ahead of talks with South Korea and Japan. “I could see the contours of a deal with the Republic of Korea coming together, and we’ve had substantial talks with the Japanese,” he noted.
Earlier on Monday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that the United States has received several trade proposals from different countries, with India emerging as a leading candidate. “India is likely to be among the first nations we finalize a trade agreement with,” Bessent stated.
The potential agreement with India could mark a significant step in strengthening economic ties between the two nations, especially as global trade dynamics continue to shift.
