Trump Does it Again: US president renews claim of stopping India-Pakistan ‘nuclear war'

Published on 23/08/2025 01:51 PM

US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that his intervention prevented a potential “nuclear war” between India and Pakistan. Wearing a cap that read “Right About Everything,” Trump repeated his long-standing assertion that Washington was key to de-escalating tensions.

"it takes two to tango. I wanted to have a meeting with those two... But many people think nothing will come out of that meeting... We solved one that could have been a nuclear war between India and Pakistan... I solved them all... In two weeks, we'll know which way I'm going... and they'll learn which way I'm going," he said.#WATCH | Washington DC | On the Russia-Ukraine war, US President Donald Trump says, "... India has consistently rejected this narrative, stressing that it was Pakistan which sought a ceasefire after suffering major losses during Operation Sindoor. According to New Delhi, the breakthrough came through direct communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries, without any US involvement.

Turning to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Trump signalled he will take a “very important decision” in the next two weeks, which could involve imposing “massive sanctions or tariffs” on Russia or telling Ukraine that “it’s not Washington’s war.”

“In two weeks, we are going to know which way I am going… whether it’s massive sanctions or massive tariffs or both, or do we do nothing and say it’s your fight,” he told reporters.

The president also pushed for direct talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“It takes two to tango. I wanted to have a meeting with those two. If they don’t meet, then why was it so, after I told them to have a meeting,” Trump said.

Trump’s remarks come amid heightened India-Pakistan tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which left 26 dead.

Since May 10, when Trump first declared that the US facilitated a “full and immediate” ceasefire after a “long night” of negotiations, he has reiterated more than 40 times that he was central to ending the standoff. India, however, maintains that the de-escalation was achieved independently.
