UIDAI uses multi-layered security to protect Aadhaar data: Government

Published on 17/12/2025 04:07 PM

The government has taken strong steps to protect Aadhaar users’ personal data, and so far, there has been no data leak from the central Aadhaar database.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said on Wednesday that UIDAI uses several layers of security to protect people’s information. "Till date, no breach of Aadhaar card holders' data has occurred from the UIDAI database," the release said.

The system uses a “defence-in-depth” approach, meaning the database is protected by multiple security layers. UIDAI also regularly reviews and audits its systems to make sure the security measures continue to work properly.

On December 17, 2025, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, shared this information in the Lok Sabha.

Jitin noted that modern encryption methods are used to secure data while it is being transmitted or stored, making sure citizens’ personal information stays protected from unauthorized access.

The UIDAI system has won the highest international recognitions for its safety standards and for its security standards too.

Its Information Security Management System has been certified under ISO 27001:2022 by STQC, confirming strong compliance with global security norms.

UIDAI has also been certified ISO/IEC 27701:2019 (Privacy Information Management System).

Besides, UIDAI has been declared as a safe system and thus the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) is providing security advices continuously to keep its cybersecurity posture," the release stated.

In order to keep the system up to date and safe, an external agency is also monitoring the compliance of the rules and regulations.

Among the compliance activities are the regular tests known as Static Application Security Testing (SAST) and Dynamic Application Security Testing (DAST).

At present, Aadhaar is the world's largest biometric identity system.

It has around 134 crore active users and has been conducting over 16,000 crore identity checks successfully.
