The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has announced a bandh across Dakshina Kannada district on Friday, May 2, in response to the brutal killing of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty in Bajpe on Thursday night.Shetty, a 30-year-old Bajrang Dal activist and a history-sheeter, was the prime accused in the 2022 murder of Mohammed Fazil in Surathkal. He was out on bail at the time of his death. Mangaluru city police commissioner Anupam Agrawal said that the incident occurred at around 8.27 pm.On Thursday evening, while traveling with friends near Kinnipadavu Cross, his vehicle was intercepted by assailants in a Swift car and a pickup truck. The attackers, numbering five to six, assaulted him with sharp weapons, inflicting grievous injuries. Shetty was rushed to AJ Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.In the wake of the incident, VHP leader Sharan Pumpwell, after visiting the hospital, announced the bandh from 6 am to 6 pm on May 2, demanding immediate arrest of the perpetrators.Authorities have imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code across Mangaluru city limits from 6 am on May 2 to 6 am on May 6 to maintain law and order. Additional police forces have been deployed, and checkpoints established in sensitive areas.The police have formed multiple teams to apprehend the assailants, and investigations are ongoing.
