Wall Street today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq open higher as investors focus on US Fed's meeting; Tesla stock jumps 7.5% today

Wall Street today: The US benchmark indices opened higher on Monday, 15 September 2025, as US stock market investors focused their attention on the Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting.

The US Federal Reserve is all set to start its two-day meeting to decide on the key benchmark interest rates for the US economy. The Jerome Powell-led FOMC will start its meeting on Tuesday, 16 September 2025 and conclude it on Wednesday, 17 September 2025.

Billionaire Elon Musk's electric vehicle manufacturing company, Tesla Inc., shares jumped 7.5% at the US market open on Monday, 15 September 2025, after the founder's stock purchase move in the firm.

Tesla shares are trading 5.27% higher at $416.80 as of 10:29 a.m. (EDT), compared to $395.94 at the previous Wall Street close last week on Friday. The stock jumped to its intraday high level of $425.70 in the early market session on Monday.

The shares were trading more than 8% during the premarket session on Monday after Musk announced that he is buying nearly $1 billion worth of the company's shares.

According to a Bloomberg report, Elon Musk's billion-dollar share purchase was executed through a revocable trust on Friday, 12 September 2025. Musk's move to buy Tesla shares in the open market came after his stake purchase in February 2020.

At 9:30 a.m. (EDT), the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.03% at the Wall Street open to 45,848.39 points, compared to 45,834.22 points at the previous US stock market session.

International Business Machines Corp., American Express Co., Amazon.com Inc., Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Caterpillar Inc., Apple Inc., Visa Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Chevron Corp., Cisco Systems Inc., Honeywell International Inc., Microsoft Corp., Coca-Cola Co., Boeing Co., UnitedHealth Group Inc., Walt Disney Co., and Salesforce Inc. are among other company shares which were trading higher on Monday's market.

While others like Walmart Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., Travelers Cos. Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble Co., 3M Co., Merck & Co. Inc., Nike Inc., Amgen Inc., McDonald's Corp., Sherwin-Williams Co., Home Depot Inc., and NVIDIA Corp., were among the laggards, according to Marketwatch data.

The S&P 500 opened 0.29% higher at 6,603.49​ points, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.46% to 22,243.199 points at the opening bell.
