Warburg Pincus LLC expects to accelerate investments in India as it taps the twin opportunities of solving succession challenges at family-owned businesses and helping Indian companies expand overseas.
“Really successful businesses are now looking for where their next generation of leadership comes from,” Chairman Charles R Kaye told reporters in Mumbai on Wednesday. In some cases, leadership remains within the family, but other family members are looking for an exit, creating opportunities for private equity firms, he added.
The New York-based company plans to invest more than the couple of billion dollars it typically deploys annually in India, joining global buyout firms looking for growth. India is now Warburg Pincus’s largest market outside the US, accounting for a double-digit percentage of its global assets under management. The firm manages more than $100 billion.
“Indian companies are now increasingly looking beyond their domestic borders, creating opportunities that span multiple markets and require partners with global resources and capabilities,” Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Perlman said.
In India, Warburg Pincus has backed privately held family owned businesses such as Appaswamy Associates and Meril Life Sciences Pvt, along with recent investments in IDFC First Bank Ltd., and Haier India alongside Bharti Enterprises Ltd.

Asia is expected to generate 50% to 60% of global economic growth over the next decade, Perlman said, noting that capital has shifted away from the US over the past year.
“This is going to be a net positive in terms of some of that capital shifting to this part of the world,” Perlman said.Continue Reading(Edited by : Srabastee Biswas)Tagsasset businesscompanies
