WAVES 2025: Mohanlal on the art of making Malayalam films: 'Art films have entertainment value and entertainment cinemas'

Published on 01/05/2025 04:19 PM

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) in Mumbai, marking the beginning of a four-day event aimed at uniting stakeholders from across the media and entertainment industry.

The summit’s inaugural session, titled “Legends & Legacies: The Stories that Shaped India’s Soul,” featured an engaging conversation between cinematic icons Mohanlal, Chiranjeevi, and Hema Malini, with actor Akshay Kumar serving as the moderator.

During the discussion, Mohanlal spoke extensively about the richness of Malayalam cinema and the deeper nuances of the cinematic arts. At one point in the session, while addressing Mohanlal, Akshay Kumar described Malayalam cinema as the "intellectual soul of Indian cinema," highlighting its depth, storytelling, and cultural influence.

Mohanlal responded saying, “It’s a thin line in terms of art house and commercial success. It has to be well balanced. Art films have entertainment value and entertainment cinemas have art in it. We have been inspired by novels for our movies.”

His response showcased a profound understanding of cinema and a deep appreciation for Indian filmmaking as a whole, transcending linguistic boundaries.

The L2: Empuraan actor further stated that no film is a bad film. “It is a piece of art”, he added.

One of the other sessions to be held today will be a compelling discussion titled ‘The Journey: From Outsider to Ruler’, Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone will share their personal trajectories, with Karan Johar taking on moderating duties.

On the work front, Mohanlal was recently seen in Malayalam film L2: Empuraan, sequel to Lucifier, both directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran. Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar was seen in Sky Force that released earlier this year.
