Weather Alert: A fresh low-pressure area is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday, November 2, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai. However, heavy rain is not expected in Tamil Nadu, it added. The system is currently developing over the southern parts of Myanmar and the adjoining Andaman Sea, and is likely to intensify further during the next 24 hours.
In its latest weather bulletin, the RMC said: "The existing cyclonic circulation over the southern Myanmar and adjoining Andaman Sea is likely to strengthen and evolve into a low-pressure area over the same region today."
However, it clarified that there is no forecast of heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu for the next seven days.
Meteorologists said the speed and intensity of the system will determine whether it will develop into a depression or strengthen further into a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal in the coming days.
At present, it is expected to move northwestwards, and if conditions remain favourable, there will be scattered rainfall over the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu later this week.
Meanwhile, in a separate update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea, which persisted since October 31, has now weakened.
The system moved east-northeastwards and formed a well-marked low-pressure area on Saturday morning and is still persisting in the same region.
According to the IMD, the weakening system is likely to move north-northeastwards towards the north-east Arabian Sea and south Gujarat coast during the next 24 hours, and is likely to develop into a small low-pressure area again before dissipating.
Despite weather systems developing on both sides of the Indian peninsula, officials stressed that the weather in Tamil Nadu will remain generally dry throughout the week with light to moderate rainfall likely at some places.
Chennai and surrounding districts are expected to have a partly cloudy sky with a maximum temperature of around 35 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of around 26 degrees Celsius.
Fishermen have been advised to remain alert over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman Sea, where wind speed is likely to reach 35-45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph at times due to developing air circulation. Meteorologists said further information will be released after the new system strengthens over the Bay of Bengal.
