The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued fresh alerts across several regions, with Pune placed under a red alert following intense overnight rainfall, while Mumbai, Thane and Raigad were marked under orange warnings. Other parts of Tamil Nadu, Hyderabad and Kolkata are also expected to see spells of rain this week, according to official forecasts.
Pune recorded heavy rainfall late on Sunday night, prompting the IMD to issue a red alert for the city at around 4 am on Monday, valid until early morning. IMD also placed Solapur and Ahmednagar districts under red alert. Residents expressed concern over lightning strikes and possible flooding, with visuals of crackling lightning shared widely on social media. The IMD cautioned that the spell could bring very heavy showers and urged citizens to remain vigilant. Neighbouring regions including Nashik, Palghar, Jalna and Nagpur remain under yellow alerts, while Thane and Raigad have been placed under orange warning.
Mumbai was battered by intense rainfall overnight, leading to waterlogging in several areas. The IMD has issued an orange alert for the city and adjoining districts, warning of heavy showers, thunderstorms, lightning and winds reaching up to 40 kmph. Traffic police shut down the Andheri Subway early on Monday after one to one-and-a-half feet of water accumulated on the stretch. Vehicles were diverted through Gokhale Bridge to ease congestion. The city's monorail services were also briefly suspended in Wadala after a technical snag, though all passengers were safely evacuated.

The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in several Tamil Nadu districts through the week. On Tuesday, isolated downpours are expected in Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, Salem and Vellore, with the rain belt expanding midweek to Ranipet, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram and Puducherry. By Thursday and Friday, showers are likely to intensify across Salem, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Mayiladuthurai, before shifting towards northern districts such as Tiruvallur, Ranipet and Vellore. Chennai is forecast to receive light rainfall with occasional localised showers, while day temperatures remain around 34°C.
In Jammu and Kashmir, persistent rainfall has forced the Shrine Board to postpone the resumption of the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. The board, which had planned to reopen the yatra on September 14 after a 19-day suspension, said the track remains unsafe due to landslides and waterlogging. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for heavy rains across the Union Territory until September 19. Authorities have also flagged disruption on the Jammu–Srinagar highway after multiple landslides, further affecting connectivity.
Hyderabad recorded heavy rainfall on Sunday, with Musheerabad logging 9.49 cm, Maredpally 7.59 cm and Himayatnagar 7.28 cm, according to the Telangana Development Planning Society. Several areas witnessed flooding and drainage overflows, while three people were swept away in separate incidents.
The IMD has forecast cloudy skies with light to moderate rain or thundershowers on September 15 and 16, accompanied by gusty winds of 30–40 kmph. Authorities have warned of waterlogging, slippery roads and traffic congestion, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel in low-lying areas.
Kolkata woke up to a rainy Monday with temperatures around 26.7°C and humidity touching 90 per cent. The continuous downpour is expected to improve the city’s air quality, which was measured at an AQI of 59 on Sunday, categorised as ‘moderate’. According to AQI.in data, the rain is likely to wash away airborne pollutants, though the city faces risks of waterlogging in low-lying pockets. The forecast indicates a 96 per cent chance of precipitation, with rainfall expected to touch 14 mm and wind speeds reaching nearly 20 kmph.
