A Turkish Airlines aircraft flying from Kathmandu to Istanbul was diverted to Kolkata on Tuesday after a fire was reported in one of its engines during the flight.
While being in mid-air cruising altitude the pilots discovered a problem with the right engine of the aircraft which they observed to be on fire.
The pilots issued a PAN-PAN emergency call at 1:38 pm, the PAN-PAN call serves to alert others about urgent situations that need immediate attention but do not pose direct threats to human life.
The crew requested for permission to land the plane at the closest operational airport which turned out to be Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.
The airline officials reported that the pilots had successfully extinguished the fire by 1:51 pm.
The aircraft proceeded to Kolkata with one engine disabled because the crew needed to follow established safety protocols for aviation operations.
The emergency situation involved 236 people who were present on the aircraft including both passengers and crew members.
The aircraft possessed enough fuel to sustain operations for eight additional hours which enabled the pilots to handle the emergency situation through safe and peaceful operations.
The Kolkata Airport authorities declared a complete emergency response after they received the emergency alert.
High alert status activated for fire tenders and medical teams and airport security personnel and rescue staff.
Runway emergency services established their positions close to the runway to ensure immediate emergency response capability during landing operations.
The aircraft planned to arrive at Kolkata airport between 2:31 pm. Officials confirmed that all necessary arrangements were made to ensure the safety of everyone on board.
The crew observed all standard safety protocols while passengers received information about the situation which occurred during the incident.
Airport authorities stated that such emergency diversions are handled with extreme care and coordination. The declaration of a full emergency does not always indicate danger yet it provides maximum safety resources for protection.
The current status shows no reported injuries while officials continue to watch the developing situation.
After the aircraft reaches the ground, inspectors will examine it further, and the airline will help passengers with their continuing travel needs.
The incident demonstrates how essential pilots need to make fast decisions because airports must maintain emergency response systems which protect passenger safety.
