What is ChatGPT Atlas? OpenAI has unveiled a new AI-powered web browser called ChatGPT Atlas. According to the company, it is designed to redefine the way people use the internet. Based entirely on ChatGPT, this browser aims to merge AI (artificial intelligence) with traditional web browsing, thereby providing a seamless and interactive online experience.
According to the company, Atlas is now available for macOS users globally and will soon be available on Windows, iOS, and Android.
Essentially, Atlas Chat puts GPT directly inside the browser instead of adding it as an extension.
The new tab page serves as both a chat window and a traditional search bar. It allows users to browse websites, get AI-generated answers, and see regular search results – all in one place. Users can switch between links, images, videos, and news without leaving the chat interface.
The biggest feature of ChatGPT Atlas is its optional browser memory. This feature helps the browser remember important information from visited websites. This will allow users to ask follow-up questions without having to re-enter the link, such as, "Summarise the job postings I checked last week."
But it should be noted that users will have complete control over what the AI remembers and can easily clear data or browse privately, says OpenAI.
By default, browsing content will not be used for model training unless the user opts for it themselves.
Another major upgrade is the introduction of 'Agent Mode', which allows ChatGPT to perform actions directly inside the browser.
For example, it can research topics, open tabs, extract data, and even interact with services like Instacart to create shopping carts from recipes.
Product lead Adam Fry explained that this means Atlas can now "book reservations or flights or even edit a document that you're working on."
The browser also includes a feature called "cursor chat". This feature lets users highlight any text, such as an email, and ask ChatGPT to instantly rewrite or refine it.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described Atlas as a step toward a new way of using the Internet – where the chat experience becomes a natural part of web navigation. "The way that we hope people will use the internet in the future… the chat experience in a web browser can be a great analogue," he said.
