As India seeks justice for the innocent 27 lives lost in the barbaric terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, speculations are rife that Pakistan Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir has fled the country. Several media reports in India citing local sources said that Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff has gone ‘MIA’.
Some reports, which Moneycontrol can’t independently verify, claimed that General Munir has gone in hiding in a bunker in Rawalpindi. With the buzz gaining traction on both sides of the border, the Pakistan government decided to give a photographic proof that ‘all is well.’
Pakistan PMO’s official X handle posted a group photo from Abbottabad a while back that showed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Gen Munir sitting in front row. Categorically captioning the photo along with the date, the Pak PMO said, “Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir (NIM) and officers of PMA Kakul in a group photo with the graduating officers of 151st Long Course at PMA Kakul, Abbottabad. April 26, 2025.”
Tensions have escalated between the two nuclear-armed neighbours after the dastardly attack in the Baisaran Valley. With tell-tale signs of Pakistan’s involvement confirmed by the intel inputs, India decided to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, which is an unprecedented step. The two nations have fought four wars and the Indus Waters Treaty was left untouched. Islamabad has said that this is an ‘illegal’ step.
Pak Army Chief has been stoking controversies with his remarks on Kashmir. Two days before the Pahalagam terror attack, Munir had called Kashmir Pakistan’s ‘jugular vein’. On Saturday, during the event, photo of which was posted by the Pak PMO, General Munir once again spoke about ‘two-nation’ theory. Speaking to the cadets at the passing out parade at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) in Kakul area of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, Munir had said that Hindus and Muslims ‘are distinct in every aspects.’
