Women abducted even in Ramayana, claims Tamil Nadu minister

Published on 29/04/2025 09:37 AM

Tamil Nadu water resources minister recently said women were abducted even in Ramayana, according to a report by Times of India.

Duraimurugan was responding to BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan's remarks at the Tamil Nadu assembly. Srinivasan said Tamil Nadu should not be compared to north Indian states when it comes to crimes against women but with advanced Scandinavian countries. "I have a fear that TN is no more a peaceful land, looking at crimes against women. Safety of women has become a concern here,” said Vanathi.

Duraimurugan responded by citing the example of a girl being raped by 23 men in Varanasi. "There will be evil forces in all places. Even in Ramayana, women were abducted. We have taken immediate action in all cases," Duraimurugan said.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi won from Varanasi for the third consecutive term.

However, Srinivasan said historically and traditionally, Tamil Nadu has a higher growth rate and “should be compared with developed countries such as Scandinavian nations”.

In response, Chief Minister M K Stalin said if Tamil Nadu needs to be compared with developed nations, then Srinivasan should speak to her party high command and seek pending funds for the state.

The Tamil Nadu government's anti-National Entrance and Eligibility Test (NEET) Bill suffered a setback recently after President Droupadi Murmu rejected it. The bill, which was cleared twice by the state legislature in 2021 and 2022, had been pending with the Union government since.

The Tamil Nadu government and the Centre are also locking horns over the three-language formula under the National Education Policy, 2020. While the central government argues that the policy enhances employment opportunities for youth across regions, Tamil Nadu sees it as an attempt to impose Hindi. The state follows a two-language policy, teaching only Tamil and English, and has a long history of opposing the imposition of Hindi.
