The rising water level of the Yamuna River has flooded Yamuna Bazaar and surrounding areas in Delhi, forcing residents to leave their homes and take shelter in temporary tents or on rooftops. On Tuesday, the water level of the Yamuna river at Delhi's Old Railway Bridge was recorded at 205.85 metres - slightly below the 206-metre mark set for drainage.
The river crossed the danger level of 205.33 metres to reach 205.55 metres on Monday afternoon and has been rising continuously since then.
Families were forced to evacuate quickly as floodwater entered their homes.
On Monday, at around 7.00 pm, "water started coming into our homes. We had to run away, taking only important things. We are very troubled," Vivek, a local, told IANS.
Another resident, Surendra Kumar, said on Tuesday, "This problem had been there for the past few days, but yesterday things worsened as the water started coming in. The government has set up tents, and we are staying there for now. However, we cannot cook since our homes are flooded, and we have not received any food yet from the administration."
Following the rising water level, authorities have opened all the gates of the Okhla barrage.
Meanwhile, residents are grappling with inadequate relief arrangements, especially food distribution in flood-affected areas.
Delhi CM Rekha Gupta visited the residential area at Yamuna Bazaar and assured that there is no flood-like situation in Delhi and the water level will drop within one to two days.
