Akshaya Tritiya Vrat Katha: Akshaya Tritiya is not just a day of prosperity but a divine opportunity to earn eternal blessings through charity, devotion, and righteous living. The word ‘Akshaya’ means ‘never diminishing’, and according to ancient scriptures, any good deed performed on this day—be it donation, penance, or worship—yields inexhaustible spiritual rewards.
The Story as Told by Lord Krishna
As narrated in the Bhavishya Purana, Lord Shri Krishna once told Yudhishthira the significance of observing Akshaya Tritiya. He spoke of a virtuous merchant named Mahoday, a Vaishya by caste, who was known for his truthfulness, gentle speech, and devotion to the divine.
Mahoday was deeply spiritual. Even amidst his busy life, he would take time to listen to religious discourses and constantly immerse his mind in sacred thoughts. One day, while travelling, he overheard sages discussing the immense importance of Akshaya Tritiya—especially when it coincides with Rohini Nakshatra and Wednesday, which amplifies the benefits of this already auspicious day.
The sages explained that on Akshaya Tritiya:
Lord Narayana (Nara-Narayan), Lord Hayagriva, and Lord Parashurama were incarnated.
Charity, yajnas, and other sacred acts performed on this rare alignment produce eternal results. The offerings made to gods and ancestors on this day—such as tarpan (ancestral rituals), daan (donation), and havan (sacred fire rituals)—never diminish in value.
Mahoday Observes the Vrat
Inspired by this wisdom, Mahoday decided to perform the Akshaya Tritiya Vrat. He travelled to the banks of the holy river Ganga, performed tarpan for his ancestors, and returned home to donate as per his capacity. His offerings included:
Pitchers of water, Barley, salt, and gram, Curd and rice (Dadyodana), Sweets, jaggery, and milk products, despite opposition from his wife—who was entangled in worldly attachments—Mahoday remained steadfast in his generosity and devotion. His unwavering dharma eventually led him to liberation (moksha).
Blessings in the Next Life
In his next birth, Mahoday was born as a Kshatriya in Kushawapuri. Blessed with immense wealth, he performed grand yajnas, made abundant donations—including cows, gold, land, and food—and helped the poor and needy. Despite giving so much, his wealth never diminished—proving the eternal nature of good karma performed on Akshaya Tritiya. Once again, he lived a righteous and prosperous life, thanks to the merit earned from the Vrat in his previous birth.
Rituals of Akshaya Tritiya
Lord Krishna told Yudhishthira that on Vaishakh Shukla Tritiya, one should:
Udakumbha Daan Mantra
Translation:
"I offer this sacred pot symbolising Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. May this offering satisfy my ancestors and forefathers. May this pot, filled with scented water, sesame, and food, serve as an eternal gift to them."
Significance in Other Scriptures
The Vishnudharmottara Purana also glorifies this day. It states that fasting on Vaishakh Shukla Tritiya brings endless virtue. When it coincides with Krittika Nakshatra, its power increases even more. Worship of Lord Vishnu with offerings of Sattu (roasted gram flour) and Akshata (unbroken rice grains) is recommended. Homa (fire ritual) with Sattu and Akshata, followed by offerings to Brahmins, brings Akshaya Punya—eternal merit.
O dear reader, the Vrat of Akshaya Tritiya is more than a ritual—it is a spiritual investment. Whatever charity, penance, chanting, or yajna done on this day never fades with time. The blessings flow across lifetimes. As Lord Krishna told Yudhishthira, "There is nothing hidden between us; I have revealed the full glory of Akshaya Tritiya to you."
