The White House on Tuesday slammed Amazon over reports suggesting that it would start displaying to consumers how much US President Donald Trump's tariffs have contributed to the price tag on its goods.
"This is a hostile and political act by Amazon. Why didn't Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?" Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters.
She added, “This is another reason why Americans should buy American.”
Following the remarks, shares of the retail giant founded by Jeff Bezos dropped more than 2% in premarket trading.
Amazon's stance highlights the growing conflict between businesses and President Trump, whose economic agenda is centered on aggressive tariffs and a global trade war.
Trump's tariffs on Chinese imports would significantly impact Amazon, as 60% of its sales originate from smaller, independent retailers heavily reliant on those imports.
