The Ayodhya Municipal Corporation has adopted a motion to ban the sale of liquor and meat along the 14-kilometre stretch of Ram Path, a road that connects Ayodhya and Faizabad.
This is an extension of an existing ban that has already been in place in Ayodhya. Now, the ban will also apply to the Faizabad side of the road.
In addition to banning meat and liquor, the new proposal also prohibits advertisements for products like paan, gutka, bidi, cigarettes, and even men’s and women’s undergarments on this religious route.
Ayodhya Mayor Girish Pati Tripathi said that the decision was made to preserve the spiritual and religious nature of the city. Since Ram Path is named after Lord Ram, the city’s governing body believes that commercial activity along it should reflect the sanctity of the area.
The executive committee of Ayodhya municipal corporation that consists of mayor, deputy mayor and twelve corporators has passed a motion for enforcing this ban, TOI reported.
Though Ayodhya itself has not allowed the sale of liquor and meat for many years, Faizabad, especially areas along Ram Path, has had several shops and hotels selling non-vegetarian food and alcohol. These include long-standing restaurants such as one nearly 50 years old on Civil Lines, which is known for its non-vegetarian dishes.
"The AMC that has passed the decision to ban liquor, meat and bad advertisements. The resolution will be sent to the Ayodhya district magistrate through proper channels for the implementation of the corporation's decision," said Mukesh Pandey, spokesperson for AMC.
Once implemented, all liquor and meat shops will need to be located at least half a kilometre away from Ram Path. Restaurants and hotels currently serving non-vegetarian food along the route will either have to stop serving it or shift their premises elsewhere.
