The Budget 2026 pegs fiscal deficit at 4.4 per cent in the current financial year, as envisaged in previous years, and 4.3 per cent of GDP the next year, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in her Budget speech on February 1.
The Centre, said the finance minister, will borrow Rs 17.2 lakh crore from the markets in FY27 to finance its fiscal deficit, with net borriwng at Rs 11.7 lakh crore.
At Rs 17.2 lakh crore, the gross borrowing target for next year marks a 16 per cent increase over the current financial year's Budget Estimate (BE) of Rs 14.82 lakh crore.
