Budget 2026: On February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented her ninth Union Budget in Parliament. The Finance Minister made several important announcements for healthcare, banking, MSME, agriculture and other sectors during his speech on Sunday. One of these is for the railway sector. In a significant move to promote environmentally sustainable passenger transport, the government has proposed to develop seven high-speed rail corridors between major urban and economic centres. These corridors will act as conduits for development, reducing travel time, reducing emissions and supporting regional development.
The proposed routes include Mumbai-Pune, Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Hyderabad-Chennai, Chennai-Bengaluru, Delhi-Varanasi and Varanasi-Siliguri. According to the government, together, these will connect India's financial centres, technology hubs, manufacturing clusters and emerging cities with fast and clean transportation.
"In order to promote environmentally sustainable passenger systems, we will develop seven high-speed rail corridors between cities as growth connectors, namely Mumbai to Pune, Pune to Hyderabad, Hyderabad to Bengaluru, Hyderabad to Chennai, and Chennai to Bengaluru. Delhi to Varanasi, Varanasi to Siliguri," the FM said during her speech.
