The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced that the allotment and generation of Universal Account Number (UAN) on the UMANG app will now be done only through Aadhaar-based authentication. The new rule is effective from August 1, 2025.
According to an EPFO circular on August 1, 2025, "To ensure error-free generation of UAN, it has been decided that w.e.f. 1st August, 2025, the allotment/generation of UAN will be done only through the Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) in UMANG App."
However, generating a UAN through the employer will continue in exceptional cases for international workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan.
Three EPFO facilities for members and staff were added to the Umang app by utilising Face Authentication Technology. These include allotment of UAN and activation, UAN activation for existing UANs, and face authentication service for existing activated UANs.
- First of all, download the UMANG app.
- Simultaneously download the Aadhaar Face RD app.
- Employees can use these facilities without speaking to their employers.
- Now, open the UMANG app and navigate to 'UAN Allotment and Activation'.
- Enter your details like Aadhaar number, mobile number, then tick the consent checkbox for Aadhaar validation.
- Now click on 'send OTP' and verify.
- Proceed with face authentication using the Aadhaar Face RC app.
- Provide consent and tap 'Face Authentication'.
- A face scan will be performed.
- Once verified, the system generates a UAN and sends it to your mobile via SMS.
If you already have a UAN but haven’t activated it yet. Follow these steps:
- Open the UMANG app and go to "UAN Activation".
- Enter Aadhaar number and mobile number.
- Consent for Aadhaar validation.
- Tap "Send OTP" and verify using your Aadhaar-linked mobile.
- Proceed with Face Authentication using the UIDAI API.
- After successful verification
- Your UAN gets activated.
