In a major digital overhaul of India’s PAN and TAN services, LTIMindtree Limited has been awarded the PAN 2.0 Project by the Income Tax Department, sources in the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) told CNBC-TV18.

The project, recently approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), is expected to go live in 18 months and is aimed at making the PAN/TAN experience simpler, faster and more citizen-friendly, sources said.

According to CBDT officials, PAN 2.0 is envisioned as a one-stop platform for all services related to Permanent Account Number (PAN) and Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN). The new platform will comprehensively handle allotment, updates and corrections, Aadhaar-PAN linking, re-issuance, online PAN validation, and more.

“This initiative will streamline PAN/TAN processes using latest technology, improve the speed and quality of service delivery, and strengthen grievance redressal mechanisms,” a senior CBDT official told CNBC-TV18.

The project was awarded to LTIMindtree through a competitive bidding process. The IT services firm will be responsible for end-to-end development and deployment of the new platform, in close coordination with the Income Tax Department.

Sources added that the modernised system will also improve back-end integration with other government platforms, ensure greater data accuracy, and reduce the turnaround time for service requests.

Once operational, PAN 2.0 is expected to significantly improve the taxpayer experience and reinforce the department’s focus on digital-first governance.
