From banker to Canada's Prime Minister: How Mark Carney stepped up after Justin Trudeau's exit

Published on 29/04/2025 03:03 PM

A former central bank governor is set to become Canada’s 25th Prime Minister following the Liberal Party’s unexpected success—despite earlier doubts about their chances after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepped down.

Notably, he will be the first person to take on the role without any previous experience in elected office, and the first since John Turner to assume the position without already holding a seat in the House of Commons at the time of his appointment.

Amid rising economic tensions with the United States, newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a sharp rebuke to US President Donald Trump in his victory speech.

“President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never, ever happen,” Carney declared to a cheering crowd.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre’s adoption of a “Trump-lite” campaign style backfired, as growing comparisons to the former US president damaged his public image—ultimately playing to Mark Carney’s advantage.

Now let's take a look at Mark Carney - a political newcomer rose to victory in the elections.

Who is Mary Carney?

Mark Carney’s journey to the highest political office in Canada is anything but typical.

Carney’s debut in Canadian politics came at a moment of rising tension with the United States, particularly over trade and national sovereignty.

Running on a platform focused on economic resilience and defending Canadian sovereignty, Carney struck a firm tone against U.S. President Donald Trump’s confrontational policies.

“America is not Canada, and Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape or form,” he told voters during the campaign — a message that clearly resonated with a nation growing uneasy over its southern neighbor’s rhetoric.

Although Carney was a newcomer to Parliament, his extensive experience in managing financial crises helped him rise to the role of Liberal Party leader after Justin Trudeau's departure. He quickly overcame doubts about his outsider status, defeating well-established politicians like Chrystia Freeland to claim the leadership position.

As Prime Minister, Carney faces the challenge of navigating a delicate relationship with Washington while addressing pressing economic issues at home—tasks that many believe align with his strengths.
