As military tensions between India and Pakistan escalate following the deadly attacks on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, global diplomatic circles are witnessing flurry of activities.
While most nations including the US have condemned the attack that killed 27 people, Iran has offered to mediate between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Iran’s foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi quoted a 13thcentury Persian couplet by poet Saadi in his X post as he offered Tehran’s help to diffuse tension between New Delhi and Islamabad.
Terming both countries as ‘brotherly neighbours’ of Iran, he said that his country is ready to use the ‘good offices’ located in both New Delhi and Islamabad to help in forging ‘better understanding.’ Araghchi termed the fresh escalations as ‘difficult time.’
Day after the Friday post, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also dialled up Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express his anguish over the Baisaran Valley attack. As per the Ministry of External Affairs, both leaders agreed that the terror attacks can’t be justified in any manner whatsoever.
While Iran made the mediation offer, US President Donald Trump had said that he believed that both countries can ‘sort it out on their own.’
India has taken a firm step and cornered Pakistan following the probes that revealed how the terrorists were trained in PoK. Islamabad, on the other hand, has denied any role in Pahalgam terror attack and offered a neutral investigation.
