Maruti Suzuki WagonR Milestone: Millions sold, new swivel seat launched

Published on 18/12/2025 05:34 PM

Maruti Suzuki's WagonR celebrated the new milestone of total production of 3.5 million cars since its introduction in 1999 December.

The car now ranks alongside the Alto and Swift in terms of volume. It is marketed in over 75 countries and the global sales reached 10 million in August 2025.

Hisashi Takeuchi, the MD & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, commented that the milestone of production indicates the level of trust the customers have in the company.

"The WagonR's features such as its signature tall-boy design, roomy interiors and fuel economy have made it very popular and are also indicators of our customers' needs and expectations.

We very much appreciate their unwavering support and are determined to deliver 'Joy of Mobility' for generations to come," he said.

In conjunction with reaching this milestone, Maruti Suzuki introduces the wagonR swivel seat which will be the first step towards providing mobility access for the elderly and the handicapped.

A press release states that the new seat option is meant to facilitate the travel of those who find it difficult to get in and out of cars.

The swivel seat is a special type of chair which rotates towards the door. Maruti Suzuki collaborated with a startup named TRUEAssist Technology Private Limited to come up with this innovative solution.

The automobile manufacturer opted for the WagonR as the model for this project due to its lofty design.

This figure allows the passengers to enjoy a lot of headroom and legroom.

Initially, the rotating seat was offered at 200 dealers in 11 different cities.

If many customers demand it, the company will bring it to more locations. The kit has passed safety tests and is delivered with a 3-year warranty. It does not alter the basic structure of the vehicle.
