The month of May in most parts of the country is expected to see higher-than-usual temperatures, with the northwest, central and some eastern areas likely to face more heatwave days than normal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday.

Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and some parts of Gujarat, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and adjoining Telangana, and north Karnataka are likely to experience ‘above normal’ heatwave days in May.

While northern India is likely to receive above-average rainfall, other parts--especially the northwest, central, and northeast--may experience drier-than-usual conditions, IMD's Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said in a virtual press conference on Wednesday.

Most parts may face 2-7 heatwave days -- 1 to 4 days higher than normal -- during the month, IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra was quoted by TOI.

However, frequent and intense thunderstorms, and 'above normal' rainfall in May are likely to prevent temperatures from rising to the levels seen in May 2024, the TOI report said, citing the IMD.

He said ‘above normal’ maximum (day) temperatures are, however, likely over most parts of the country except many parts of southern peninsular India, and some parts of east India where normal to 'below normal' maximum temperatures are likely.

The temperature situation was worse in April — the month which experienced seventh highest mean April temperature (29.15 degree celsius which was higher by 0.85 degree C than normal) over the country as a whole since the formal recording began in India in 1901.

Notably, there was a sharp increase in heatwave activity during April. Western India was hit hardest, with Rajasthan and Gujarat experiencing between 6 to 11 heatwave days, significantly higher than the average of 2 to 3. East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha recorded 4 to 6 heatwave days, while Maharashtra and nearby areas saw slightly fewer than usual.
