US pushes for calm between India and Pakistan after Pahalgam terrorist attack

Published on 01/05/2025 07:43 AM

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio conducted high-level diplomatic calls on Wednesday urging both India and Pakistan to reduce tensions following terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that claimed the lives of 26 civilians. The attack was carried out by The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy for Pak terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.

In separate conversations with External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Rubio stressed on the need for direct communication between the nuclear neighbours while offering American support to India in its fight against extremism.

"Secretary Rubio stressed the importance of re-establishing direct communications and maintaining peace in the region," according to a State Department official familiar with the calls.

Rubio's calls mark the highest levels of publicly known simultaneous diplomatic engagements from Washington aimed at reducing India-Pakistan tensions since the April 22 attack.

Reuters reported that Rubio "urged Pakistani officials’ cooperation in investigating this unconscionable attack," the State Department said. Sharif’s office reportedly asked Rubio to urge India "to dial down the rhetoric."

Since the April 22 terrorist attack, India has suspended the Indus Water Treaty, shut down the Attari-Wagah border, both nations have closed airspace to each other's airlines, while forces have exchanging fire across the Line of Control.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to punish those responsible for the attack, leading Pakistan to claim that military action appears imminent.
