Stock Market Update: Indian equity benchmarks were trading firmly in the green on Monday, extending Friday’s rally in a holiday-shortened week, even as global cues remained mixed. Buying interest in information technology and metal stocks supported sentiment through the session.
At around 1:05 PM, the BSE Sensex was up 521 points, or 0.61 per cent, at 85,450, while the NSE Nifty 50 gained 174 points, or 0.67 per cent, to trade near 26,140. Market breadth remained positive, with 2,608 shares advancing, 1,245 declining and 167 remaining unchanged.
Among Nifty 50 constituents, Shriram Finance, Wipro India and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles emerged as the top gainers, while Tata Consumer Products, State Bank of India and SBI Life Insurance weighed on the index.
On the sectoral front, Nifty IT and Nifty Metal indices rose over 1 per cent each, leading the gains. This was followed by strength in media and consumer durables stocks, reflecting selective buying across pockets of the market.
The broader market also outperformed, with both the Nifty MidCap and Nifty SmallCap indices advancing around 0.8 per cent each, indicating improved risk appetite.
In stock-specific action, Infosys shares climbed to a more than nine-month high after its US subsidiary settled a lawsuit. Meanwhile, the Gujarat Kidney and Super Speciality IPO was subscribed 0.67 times by early afternoon on Day 1, led by strong retail interest.
