Pakistani man dies of cardiac arrest in Amritsar hours before deportation at Attari-Wagah border

An elderly Pakistani man, who was scheduled to be deported from India, died of cardiac arrest in Amritsar on Wednesday night. As per a report by PTI, the deceased has been identified as one Abdul Waheed.

The 69-year-old was brought to Amritsar by the Jammu and Kashmir Police from Srinagar. The repatriation was scheduled in the wake of Centre revoking the visas for all Pakistani nationals under 12 categories. Waheed was living in India for past 17 years.

After the Ministry of Home Affairs ordered all states to identify and deport all Pakistani citizens, the local police sprung into action. The cops detected Waheed living in Srinagar on an expired visa.

So far, the government data states that 224 Pakistanis and Indians holding ‘No Obligation to Return to India’ (NORI) visas crossed over to India through the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Punjab’s Attari border. The data further adds that nearly 140 Pakistani citizens crossed over ahead of the visa deadline.

Following last week's terror attack in Pahalgam, the Centre unveiled several strong measures: suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, reducing diplomatic ties with Islamabad, and directing all Pakistani nationals on short-term visas to exit India immediately or face consequences.
