Stock Market Closing Bell: Sensex, Nifty slip after four-day rally - Check top gainers, losers

Stock Market Closing Bell: The benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, fell on Wednesday, October 8, ending a four-day winning streak. The market had started higher, supported by IT stocks and fresh foreign fund inflows, but most sectors later traded lower as investors stayed cautious.

The BSE Sensex closed at 81,773.66, down 153 points (-0.19 per cent), and the Nifty 50 settled at 25,046.15, down 62 points (-0.25 per cent), as investors digested sectoral trends and foreign fund flows.

Among the top performers, Titan (+4.4 per cent), Infosys (+2.44 per cent), TCS (+2.02 per cent), HCL Tech (+1.36 per cent), and Tech Mahindra (+1.17 per cent) led gains, boosting IT sector sentiment. Eternal (+0.93 per cent) and Bharti Airtel (+0.79 per cent) also supported the market, while Tata Steel (+0.38 per cent) and Bajaj Finance (+0.37 per cent) added modest gains.

On the losing side, several heavyweight stocks faced selling pressure. Tata Motors (-2.51 per cent), M&M (-1.87 per cent), BEL (-1.66 per cent), Ultratech Cement (-1.55 per cent), and Power Grid (-1.40 per cent) were among the top laggards.

Other notable decliners included Sun Pharma (-1.29 per cent), Reliance (-1.23 per cent), Bajaj Finserv (-1.17 per cent), and Asian Paints (-1.14 per cent), weighing on the broader market.

Sectoral indices reflected mixed trends. The Nifty IT index gained 1.51 per cent, while Nifty Auto (-1.53 per cent), Nifty Media (-1.71 per cent), and Nifty Realty (-1.83 per cent) fell. Nifty Bank (-0.39 per cent), Nifty PSU Bank (-0.80 per cent), and Nifty Energy (-1.08 per cent) also declined.

Midcap and smallcap indices closed lower, with Nifty Midcap 50 (-0.74 per cent) and Nifty Smallcap 50 (-0.50 per cent) among the losers.

Overall, the market remained cautiously positive, led by IT and select consumer stocks, supported by foreign fund inflows. Investors are likely to watch global cues, earnings updates, and sector performance for near-term guidance.
